UNIC crane builds radar dome on The Rock of Gibraltar
A UNIC spider crane starred in a recent episode of Channel 5 documentary, Gibraltar: Britain in the Sun, helping to build a new radar dome on top of The Rock of Gibraltar.
At 1400 feet above sea level, a team of RAF riggers used a UNIC URW-376 mini crane to dismantle a 24 year old radar dome and build a new one in its place. The dome protects the radar antennas used by nearby Gibraltar International Airport to assist with aeroplane take offs and landings.
As the radar had to be turned off during the job, the installation team had to work quickly in case the weather turned bad and aircraft needed radar assistance to land.
Once the old dome had been taken down, the 2.9 tonne capacity UNIC URW-376 lifted each of the new 125kg 2 metre wide panels into position for the riggers to bolt together. Strong 74 km/h winds meant the job had to be stopped temporarily, but the mini crane soon made up for lost time once the bad weather had cleared.
