UNIC crane replaces power line poles at stately home
A 6 tonne capacity UNIC URW-706 mini spider crane was recently hired to replace a power line pole on the estate of Arbury Hall, an Elizabethan manor house in Warwickshire, UK.
The 2013 RIBA Stirling Prize winning Astley Castle, where UNIC mini cranes have also worked in the past, is also situated on the estate. Built on the ruins of an Augustinian Priority, the Newdigate family has lived in Arbury Hall for more than 400 years.
The UNIC mini crane worked in a small yard outside a barn on the 100 acre estate, removing and replacing an 8.5 metre tall post that was positioned behind it. Firstly the mini crane lifted the 200kg replacement pole over the barn rooftop and placed it next to the old pole. The crane then lifted the old pole away back over the rooftop to be removed from the site, while the new pole was moved into the space it left. The mini crane used its working area limitation function to make sure it didn’t come into contact with any of the surrounding telephone wires.
UNIC spider cranes are often used for replacing heavy power and telecommunications poles. Read more about how a UNIC URW-706 helped with a mobile phone mast decommissioning project in the Welsh woodland, and how a UNIC URW-376 removed a telephone pole using a man basket.
