Levo, a trusted dealer of UNIC Cranes, recently carried out the delicate task of replacing the protective glass shielding Michelangelo’s renowned Pietà statue in St. Peter’s Basilica, Vatican City.
The Pietà, an iconic masterpiece sculpted by Michelangelo, holds profound artistic and religious significance. Preserving the statue is essential, which is why protective glass was renewed to shield it from environmental factors and potential harm. The replacement of this glass required careful planning and execution to safeguard the artwork during the process.
The newly installed protective glass is an advanced six-metre-high structure designed to enhance both security and visibility. Unlike the previous glass, which had a noticeable greenish tint, the new panels offer superior transparency, allowing visitors to appreciate the intricate details of the sculpture with greater clarity. Additionally, the upgraded glass provides increased resistance to potential damage, ensuring long-term preservation while maintaining the delicate balance between protection and an unobstructed viewing experience.
Levo selected two models from UNIC’s range of mini spider cranes for this project: the URW-706 and the URW-547. The URW-706, with a lifting capacity of 6 tonnes and a maximum lifting height of 19.5 meters, is renowned for its compact design, allowing it to navigate through standard double doorways and operate efficiently in confined spaces. This made it an ideal choice for the restricted environment of St. Peter’s Basilica.
The URW-547, offering a 4-tonne lifting capacity and a maximum lifting height of 18.2 meters, complemented the URW-706 by providing versatility and precision in handling the protective glass panels. Its compact footprint and advanced manoeuvrability ensured that the installation was completed without disrupting the sanctity of the basilica or compromising the safety of the Pietà.
The collaborative efforts between UNIC and Levo ensured that the protective glass was replaced faultlessly, preserving the integrity of one of the world’s most treasured artworks. This job not only highlights the reliability of UNIC’s mini spider cranes but also reinforces the partnership between Levo and UNIC. Together, they continue to set new standards in completing complex projects that demand both technical proficiency and a deep respect for cultural heritage.
