Over the last two years, UNIC mini cranes have been hard at work in Glasgow city centre helping to give the 17 storey St Andrews House building a makeover, as it is turned from offices into a new hotel.
The new 210 bedroom hotel on West Nile Street was originally built in 1963 and is a landmark location in Glasgow as it one of the city’s first high-rise buildings. UNIC mini cranes were hired during the project to assist with a number of lifting challenges.
A 6 tonne capacity UNIC URW-706 mini crane worked on the St Andrews House site since 2010, lifting materials in and out of the building so refurbishment and recladding work could be carried out. Several smaller 2.9 tonne capacity UNIC URW-295 spider cranes were used to work from inside the building to install cladding and remove mast climbers. Two of the compact 600mm wide machines were also lifted up to the building’s rooftop using a goods hoist, where at 78 metres high they could install the final few cladding panels once the hoist was removed.
