UNIC Cranes Europe, supplier of UNIC Mini Spider Cranes, played a vital role in the installation of the star figure in the Jurassic Dinosaur Trail at the Leeds Trinity Shopping Centre with their URW-706-2 Mini Spider Crane.
Featuring more than 12 dinosaurs throughout the exhibition, the 5-metre-tall T-rex was undoubtedly the star of the month-long event. Positioned inside Trinity Shopping Centre, eye-level with the second-floor walkways and under the curved glass roof, the dinosaur created a striking contrast to the modern shopping environment, reminiscent of a scene from Jurassic Park.
UNIC Cranes Europe was brought in to install three of the 12 dinosaurs because the original providers lacked the right equipment to erect the colossal figures. When the customer failed to achieve the necessary height with a forklift, they wisely contacted UNIC Cranes Europe.
Although the lift itself was relatively simple, the 1.5-tonne weight of the dinosaur and the awkward location added numerous complications. Situated on a ground-floor balcony with first-floor walkways adjacent to the structure, the crane had to be carefully transported, taking into account the structures above and below.
Following an initial consultation with the customer, UNIC Cranes Europe developed a detailed plan centred on the URW-706-2 Mini Spider Crane. Despite being one of the largest mini cranes in our range, it was compact enough to fit through any necessary doors while providing the required lifting power.
The plan involved driving the mini crane through ground floor bollards and walkways, using plywood to protect the floor. The journey included tracking through two city centre streets.
Thanks to the URW-706-2 Mini Spider Crane’s folding outriggers and easily retracted boom, we provided the customer with a straightforward solution to access the building. Its compact size, combined with 6 tonnes of lifting power, ensured ample capacity for any potential variables during the lift.
The URW-706-2 Mini Spider Crane’s 3-metre lifting radius and 25.2-metre maximum height allowed the lift to be performed quickly, safely, and effectively. The T-rex was precisely positioned, overlooking the lower floor of the Leeds Trinity Shopping Centre. The excellent handling of this mini crane turned a seemingly difficult task into an achievable one, thanks to the exceptional lifting solution provided by UNIC Cranes Europe.
