We spoke with Simone, Electro-Mechanical Engineer, about her role, the skills needed to work with heavy lifting equipment, and her advice for women considering a career in construction or engineering.
A Day in the Life of an Electro-Mechanical Engineer
Simone’s role is primarily as a service engineer, helping to ensure machinery is prepared and maintained for a wide range of lifting operations.
“No two days are ever quite the same,” she explains. “I help look after our machinery so it’s ready for whatever lifting operation comes up.”
Her day-to-day work can vary significantly depending on project requirements. Some days are spent in the workshop, testing and preparing machines before they are delivered to site. Other days involve travelling to sites to carry out maintenance or repairs.
Alongside hands-on work with lifting equipment, Simone also spends time on CAD work, developing and working through technical designs when possible.
“It’s a good balance between practical work and technical tasks,” she says. “I try to spend some time each day working through CAD projects when I can.”
Key Skills for Working with Heavy Lifting Equipment
Working with specialist lifting machinery requires a broad mix of technical ability and personal skills.
According to Simone, being thorough and dedicated to the job is essential.
“You need to be able to work independently, but also collaborate with others depending on the task at hand.”
Strong communication skills also play a key role, whether that’s explaining technical details, coordinating with colleagues, or listening carefully to others on a project.
Problem-solving is another critical part of the job.
“You need to be able to work through challenges methodically, but also stay calm under pressure,” she explains. “Every job is different, and sometimes you need to take the time to think things through to find the right solution.”
Advice for Women Considering a Career in Construction or Engineering
When asked what advice she would give to women who might be unsure about entering the construction or heavy equipment industry, Simone’s answer is simple.
“Just go for it.”
“If it’s something you’re truly interested in, don’t let anyone or anything hold you back,” she says.
She highlights that the construction and engineering industries are incredibly diverse, offering a wide range of roles and career paths.
“There are so many different jobs within the industry that you’ll be able to find something that suits you.”
Her advice is to take the opportunity and see where it leads.
“The only thing you can do is try it. You have nothing to lose, but so much to gain.”
